II Samuel 19:10Sefaria

Following the collapse of the rebellion and the death of Absalom, a profound sense of national soul-searching sweeps through the tribes of Israel. Looking back at their recent actions, the people recognize the deep injustice of betraying the leader who had previously secured their safety. They come to realize that their participation in the uprising was an act of foolishness and severe ingratitude.

As this realization takes hold, a widespread public reckoning begins. The primary approach among commentators is that this reckoning takes the form of intense debate, with the people arguing among themselves to stir up public support for restoring David to the throne Conversely, another perspective suggests that there is no argument at all; rather, it is a moment of sweeping, unanimous agreement where the entire nation accepts their guilt and acknowledges the truth together [אברבנאל].

At the heart of this national awakening is the jarring contrast between David's past heroism and his recent retreat. The people are filled with remorse, understanding that even if Absalom had survived, following him meant repaying evil for good to the man who had personally rescued them from the Philistines [מלבי״ם].

This regret leads the Israelites to re-evaluate the true reason behind the king's departure. They realize that David, a legendary warrior who never cowered before his enemies, did not run away out of fear or cowardice. Instead, his retreat is a testament to his moral integrity. He deliberately left the area to prevent his son from committing the grave sin of engaging him in direct combat [מצודת דוד, אברבנאל], and to spare the nation from being forced into a tragic war against Absalom [רד״ק]. Guided by this new understanding, the Israelites reach the clear conclusion that it is their absolute duty to take action and restore the king to his rightful place.
