Barzillai the Gileadite, one of David's most loyal supporters who sustained the king during his exile in Mahanaim, makes his way down from his hometown of Rogelim to the river. He arrives to bid the king a peaceful farewell, acting much like a gracious host warmly seeing off an honored guest [ביאור שטיינזלץ, אברבנאל].

There are different perspectives on exactly how they met at the water. One view suggests that Barzillai hurried ahead, reaching the Jordan River before the king [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Another perspective maintains that he simply crossed the river alongside the king [מצודת ציון]. Regardless of the exact timing, commentators agree that his sole purpose is to respectfully escort the king and see him off in peace.

This moment of parting also brings an offer of deep gratitude. David, wishing to repay the immense kindness he received, invites Barzillai to bring his entire household and relocate to Jerusalem, where the king promises to provide for him year after year. However, Barzillai is eighty years old. Recognizing his advanced age, he politely declines the generous offer, feeling it is simply not right to uproot himself at this stage of his life [אברבנאל].
