King David seeks to repay a deep debt of gratitude to a loyal supporter who sustained him during a time of crisis. As the king prepares to return to his capital, he extends a highly prestigious invitation to his benefactor, Barzillai, asking him to join the royal entourage.

Custom dictates that the most distinguished and important figure in the nation accompanies the king on such a journey to show him honor. By personally asking Barzillai to travel alongside him, David makes a public declaration that there is no one in the nation greater or more deserving of this honor [מלבי״ם, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

David promises to provide for Barzillai in Jerusalem as a direct, measure-for-measure response to the care he received when he was vulnerable. The king now wishes to return the favor by supporting his benefactor with royal generosity [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. However, Barzillai is already a wealthy man who does not need financial assistance. The king's offer of provision is therefore not about charity, but rather a bestowal of double honor. First, Barzillai is offered the immense prestige of eating regularly at the king's own table. Second, he is invited to elevate his status by moving from a small, provincial town to a permanent residence in the royal capital of Jerusalem [מלבי״ם].
