שמואל ב, פרק י״ט, פסוק י״ג

II Samuel 19:13Sefaria

Following the rebellion, a delicate political and emotional situation unfolds as the king seeks to reclaim his throne. Reaching out through his messengers, Zadok and Abiathar, David sends a message of diplomacy, closeness, and reconciliation to the elders of Judah, urging them to take the lead in his restoration. He emphasizes a dual bond between them. On one level, they are his brothers, sharing a connection with the entire nation of Israel. On a deeper level, they are his own flesh and bone, belonging to his specific tribe, the tribe of Judah [חומת אנך]. Because of this intimate tribal tie, he is naturally their king [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

Beyond simply noting their family ties, this approach serves as a calculated psychological tactic to calm their anxieties. David understands that the elders of Judah might fear punishment for their role in the recent uprising. By highlighting their shared bloodline, he reassures them that they have absolutely no reason to fear any revenge [מלבי״ם]. This appeal also reveals his sharp political wisdom. He carefully frames his message to project complete confidence in their loyalty, making any lack of desire to restore him seem unthinkable. By doing so, he minimizes the issue, reducing it to nothing more than a puzzling delay in their public support [מלבי״ם].

Given this profound closeness, David questions why his own tribe is lagging behind. The primary approach among commentators is that their shared bloodline should naturally compel them to lead the effort rather than delay it. Furthermore, since the tribe of Judah was the very first to anoint David at the dawn of his kingship, it is only fitting that they be the first to restore him to power now, ahead of the other tribes [חומת אנך]. The urgency of this request is driven by the events unfolding at that exact moment. Just as David dispatches his messengers to the elders of Judah, appeals from the rest of the Israelites are already arriving, asking him to return to the throne [רד״ק]. He therefore acts quickly to ensure his own tribe secures its rightful place at the forefront of his return.
