שמואל ב, פרק י״ט, פסוק כ״ב

II Samuel 19:22Sefaria

וַיַּ֨עַן אֲבִישַׁ֤י בֶּן־צְרוּיָה֙ וַיֹּ֔אמֶר הֲתַ֣חַת זֹ֔את לֹ֥א יוּמַ֖ת שִׁמְעִ֑י כִּ֥י קִלֵּ֖ל אֶת־מְשִׁ֥יחַ יְהֹוָֽה׃ {ס}

The aftermath of a bitter rebellion brings up the difficult question of whether a simple apology can erase a severe crime. Abishai son of Zeruiah steps forward with a firm demand for the death penalty against Shimei son of Gera, entirely rejecting the man's attempts to make peace. To Abishai, the offense is far too serious to be easily forgiven.

The primary approach among commentators highlights Abishai's deep astonishment at the situation. He questions how mere begging, flattery [ביאור שטיינזלץ], or a minor show of submission could possibly take the place of [מצודת ציון] a just punishment. He argues firmly that such a small gesture cannot make up for a criminal act of this magnitude. The severity of the crime lies in the specific nature of the insult. Shimei did not just speak poorly; he brought deep disgrace and disrespect [מצודת ציון] upon the leader who was personally anointed for his role by God [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

While most focus on the vast difference between Shimei's small submission and his massive crime, [מלבי״ם] introduces a deeper legal argument. He points out a clear distinction between the general rebellion and Shimei's individual actions. Abishai understands that the King might be forced to pardon the rest of the nation for their part in the uprising, as the masses acted out of confusion and error. However, he insists that cursing the King was not a standard part of the rebellion. Instead, it was an isolated, highly personal, and intentional sin committed by Shimei alone. Because it was a deliberate and private attack rather than a misguided national movement, Abishai argues that Shimei does not qualify for any pardon.
