God’s response to King David’s request to build a permanent temple reveals the nature of the Divine presence throughout the history of the Israelites. Since the exodus from Egypt, God chose to accompany the people on their journeys rather than limit His presence to a single, fixed structure. God poses a rhetorical question to David, expressing a sense of wonder: since He had never dwelled in a permanent building before, why should David build Him a house now [מצודת דוד]?
The fact that no permanent house for God existed before David’s time was not the result of sin or negligence on the part of previous leaders and judges. Rather, the proper time for building the Temple had simply not yet arrived. The Israelites were still engaged in ongoing wars and had not yet achieved a state of national rest and security [אברבנאל]. Consequently, the Divine presence remained in a state of impermanence [מלבי״ם]. The temporary nature of God's dwelling includes the various historical stations of His presence. This began with the tent that wandered with the Israelites through the desert and continued with the Tabernacle as it stood in Shiloh, Nov, and Gibeon [מלבי״ם]. Even when the Tabernacle was established in Shiloh, it was not considered a true, permanent house. Although its lower walls were constructed from stone, it lacked a solid roof and was instead covered with fabric curtains, much like a typical tent [רש״י, ביאור שטיינזלץ].
Beyond the historical and physical reasons, this temporary state held deep spiritual significance. God's dwelling within a wandering structure was not a compromise or a spiritual shortcoming. Just as the future permanent Temple in Jerusalem would align with a fixed temple in heaven, the wandering Tabernacle corresponded to a mobile heavenly tabernacle. Wherever the Tabernacle traveled on earth, it perfectly mirrored its heavenly counterpart. Through this alignment, Divine abundance flowed flawlessly from the heavens down to the earth, completely unaffected by the absence of a permanent physical building [אלשיך].
