The focus then shifts inward, addressing the human mind and its driving forces. The prayer asks God to take hold of the underlying motivation behind human thoughts [ביאור שטיינזלץ], or the very capacity for action and creation [מצודת ציון]. The plea is for God to shape and guide the internal inclinations of the people, ensuring that their thoughts and actions are always directed toward goodness [רש"י, מצודת דוד].
