וְכִ֨י מִ֤י אֲנִי֙ וּמִ֣י עַמִּ֔י כִּי־נַעְצֹ֣ר כֹּ֔חַ לְהִתְנַדֵּ֖ב כָּזֹ֑את כִּי־מִמְּךָ֣ הַכֹּ֔ל וּמִיָּדְךָ֖ נָתַ֥נּוּ לָֽךְ׃

The massive effort by the Israelites to donate vast wealth for the construction of the Temple brings about deep wonder and humility. This amazement is magnified when looking at the nation's history. Until the reign of King David, the people suffered greatly from enemy oppression and constant wars. The sudden ability to gather such enormous resources is entirely unexpected [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Looking at this incredible display of generosity, King David expresses astonishment at the nation's financial capacity. He wonders how he and his people managed to gather and hold onto such wealth [מצודת ציון, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. He questions how their power grew strong enough to accumulate these riches [מצודת דוד, מלבי״ם], and how they found the inner drive to volunteer with such overwhelming generosity [רש״י].

The answer to David's wonder lies in the recognition that everything comes directly from God. The extreme wealth the people possessed was not the result of their own strength or effort; rather, it was entirely a gift from Him [מצודת דוד, מלבי״ם]. The concept of divine ownership presented here is absolute. It is not merely the surplus wealth that belongs to God. Even the basic necessities a person requires for themselves and their household are truly His [חומת אנך]. God has simply distributed a small fraction of His endless abundance to humanity [רש״י].

With this understanding, the act of donating takes on a profound meaning. When the people bring their offerings, they are essentially giving back to God from the very hand that provided them with the abundance in the first place [ביאור שטיינזלץ, מצודת דוד]. In truth, the wealth never actually left God's possession. It always remained in His hand, and by donating, the people are simply returning what already belongs to Him [מלבי״ם]. Ultimately, the act of giving is a cycle: from the portion God has graciously given to the people, they return and offer a small fraction back to Him [רש״י, מנחת שי].
