דברי הימים א, פרק כ״ט, פסוק ה׳

I Chronicles 29:5Sefaria

Building the Temple requires more than huge physical resources; it demands a deep partnership and the sincere desire of the people. King David completes his enormous preparations for the Temple, ensuring that all the necessary gold, silver, and materials are ready. He even sets aside an extra budget for unexpected expenses and beautiful decorations [ביאור שטיינזלץ], handing the work over to skilled craftsmen and artisans [מצודת ציון, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

After securing the physical foundation, David turns directly to the nation with a personal invitation to contribute. From a practical standpoint, even though David has already gathered vast treasures on his own, he now gives the people the opportunity to actively participate. He encourages them to bring their own voluntary donations of silver, gold, and building supplies to add to the Temple treasury [רש״י, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

Beyond the collection of wealth, there is a much deeper purpose to this invitation. Simply gathering materials and hiring workers is not enough to bring true holiness into the building. The essential condition for God to grant His favor and for holiness to rest upon the Temple is the willing heart of the nation. David asks them to volunteer because the most important part of the contribution is not the physical material itself, but the inner desire and dedication behind it. This sincere devotion is what God truly desires [מלבי״ם].

This act of giving is closely tied to the idea of initiation and bringing an offering, echoing the way Aaron and his sons were dedicated to serve in the Tabernacle [רש״י, מצודת ציון]. Contributing to the Temple is therefore far more than just funding a public project. It is a profound act of personal and spiritual dedication to God.
