The unfolding history of the Israelite tribes sometimes pauses to look back and expand on families of special significance. The genealogy of the tribe of Levi is introduced anew, even though the names of his sons were already listed earlier. This return to the beginning of the family line serves to broaden the scope and encompass the entire tribe. The primary approach among commentators is that the earlier genealogical record focused strictly on the lineage of Aaron and the priests. Having established that specific priestly line, the narrative loops back to the origins of the tribe to detail the ancestry of the remaining Levite families who did not serve in the priesthood.

As the family tree is laid out again, a slight variation appears in the name of one of the sons, who is now called Gershom instead of Gershon. This does not indicate a different individual. The two names refer to the exact same person, as their ending sounds are naturally interchangeable in the biblical language [רד״ק].
