I Chronicles 6:8Sefaria

אֶלְקָנָ֥ה בְנ֛וֹ וְאֶבְיָסָ֥ף בְּנ֖וֹ וְאַסִּ֥יר בְּנֽוֹ׃

Tracing family lineages often reveals intricate family trees rather than simple, straight lines of descent. In the ongoing record of the Kohathite family, the relationships between the listed individuals require careful attention to understand exactly how they are connected.

Typically, these records follow a continuous chain where each person is the child of the one listed just before him. However, the primary approach among commentators is that this specific family group breaks that pattern. Elkanah and Ebiasaph are not father and son, and neither of them is the son of Assir, who was mentioned just prior. Instead, these three men are brothers, all born directly to Korah.

As the lineage moves forward, another son named Assir is introduced. Because an Assir was already identified as one of the three brothers, [מצודת דוד] clarifies that this refers to a completely different person who happens to share the same name. This second Assir is the son of Ebiasaph, and it is through him that the family line continues into the following generations.
