I Chronicles 6:51Sefaria

The distribution of cities among the Levite families unfolds further, focusing on the additional territories granted to the descendants of Kohath. The primary approach among commentators is that the account highlights a specific remnant of the Kohathite families. These were the remaining members who had not yet received an inheritance from the lands of Judah, Simeon, and Benjamin [רד״ק]. To provide for them, cities from the tribe of Ephraim were allocated by lot. These locations were granted in addition to the cities they received from the half-tribe of Manasseh [רש״י].

When comparing this historical record to the parallel account in the Book of Joshua, commentators observe several distinct differences in the catalog of cities. For instance, even though the tribe of Dan is not explicitly named, its cities are still counted within this list [מצודת דוד, רלב״ג]. Additionally, two cities that appear in Joshua are absent here. This omission is understood in different ways. One perspective suggests that the narrative simply relies on the overall total number of cities established earlier [רלב״ג]. Another view proposes that the two missing cities were already factored into the measurement of the open lands surrounding the listed cities [מצודת דוד].

Beyond the missing locations, there are also variations in the names of the cities themselves between the two books. The city identified as Jokmeam in this account is known as Kibzaim in Joshua. Similarly, Aner is referred to as Taanach, and Bileam is called Gath-rimmon [רלב״ג].
