The allocation of land to the Levites involved gathering cities from the other tribes, as the Levites did not receive a standard territory of their own. In the region east of the Jordan River, the tribe of Gad provided specific locations for them. Ramoth in Gilead was selected as the third city in this eastern area to be handed over to the Levites.
When this transfer took place, the grant included more than just the city itself. The Levites received Ramoth in Gilead along with its surrounding open lands. The city of Mahanaim was given to them in the exact same way, complete with its own surrounding open spaces.
