The records of the Levite families serve as more than just a list of names; they map out the central figures who formed the great choir and directed the musical worship. The leaders of this choir stood alongside their sons to sing and guide the melodies [מצודת דוד]. Rather than drawing from a single family line, these musicians were chosen from across all branches of the Tribe of Levi [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

At the forefront of these musicians stood Heman, the primary singer [מצודת דוד]. He was the greatest and most distinguished among the three main choir leaders. Because of his elevated status, he was positioned directly in the center of the choir, flanked by Asaph on his right and Ethan on his left [רד"ק]. Heman was the son of Joel and the grandson of Samuel, which likely identifies him as the direct grandson of the famous prophet Samuel [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

A close look at Heman's family tree reveals that the names of his ancestors differ slightly from how they appear in earlier records. The primary approach among commentators is that such variations are common throughout the biblical text. Individuals frequently went by two different names, or their names were spelled with minor alterations using similar letters, without a strict demand for uniformity across different chapters.

To honor the leaders of the choir, their family lines are all traced back to Levi. Yet, due to Heman's exceptional standing, his lineage is traced back one generation further, reaching all the way to Jacob. This extended lineage carries profound meaning. Heman was a descendant of Korah. Generations earlier, Jacob had explicitly asked that his name not be associated with Korah's rebellious assembly against Moses. However, when Korah's descendants gathered once again—this time for the holy purpose of serving God through song during the reign of King David—the past was rectified. Through his dedication, Heman earned the privilege of having Jacob’s name proudly attached to the very top of his family tree [רד"ק].
