I Chronicles 6:10Sefaria

וּבְנֵי֙ אֶלְקָנָ֔ה עֲמָשַׂ֖י וַאֲחִימֽוֹת׃

Tracing family lineages often reveals more than just a simple list of names; it uncovers the complex histories of ancient households. The genealogical record details the descendants of Elkanah, who is identified as the son of the previously mentioned Shaul [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Amasai and Ahimoth are listed as Elkanah's descendants, but there are differing perspectives on their exact family ties.

While a straightforward reading suggests that Amasai and Ahimoth were brothers [ביאור שטיינזלץ], the text is actually written in a condensed format describing a direct, sequential line of fathers and sons. In this framework, Amasai was the son of Elkanah, and Ahimoth was the son of Amasai [מצודת דוד, רד״ק]. Ahimoth then went on to have a son of his own, whom he also named Elkanah [רד״ק].

An alternative approach maintains that Amasai and Ahimoth were indeed brothers, both sons of the first Elkanah. This perspective introduces a historical background of levirate marriage to resolve apparent contradictions with lineages presented later on [מלבי״ם]. According to this explanation, Ahimoth's original name was actually Mahath. When his brother Amasai died without leaving any sons, Mahath married the widow to carry on his brother's legacy. Because of this act, he became known as Ahimoth, which translates to "brother of the dead." The son born from this union was named Elkanah after his grandfather. Although this child was biologically the son of Ahimoth, he was officially counted in the genealogy as the son of the deceased Amasai, ensuring that his brother's name and memory would endure [מלבי״ם].
