ישעיהו, פרק י׳, פסוק ב׳

Isaiah 10:2Sefaria

A society's moral decay reaches its peak when the systems designed to protect the vulnerable are weaponized against them. Oppression and robbery are not carried out by highwaymen in the shadows, but through official channels in broad daylight. The legal system becomes an institutional tool used to exploit the weakest members of society through legal regulations, tax laws, and forged documents [ביאור שטיינזלץ, מלבי״ם]. Judges and those in power orchestrate this corruption by ordering the creation of fake debt contracts and falsified records. Through these official papers, they pervert justice and strip away the rights of the poor, the orphans, and the widows, leaving these victims entirely powerless to even cry out in self-defense [רש״י, אבן עזרא].

This corruption infects every stage of the legal process. When a wealthy, influential person faces a vulnerable individual in court, the truth usually lies with the weaker party. Yet, the judges show blatant favoritism to the rich, actively tilting the outcome in their favor [רד״ק]. During the initial phase of hearing claims, corrupt officials distort the arguments, denying the justice that rightfully belongs to the impoverished [שד״ל]. As the trial progresses to a final, clear verdict, their actions escalate to outright theft. They do not merely twist the arguments; they actively rob the vulnerable of their finalized legal rights [מלבי״ם].

The result of this institutionalized oppression is devastating. By manipulating the law, judges and lawmakers act exactly as if they were physically looting the defenseless [מצודת דוד]. They manufacture false debts in the names of deceased husbands and fathers, allowing them to legally seize a widow's property and take orphans into slavery. A subtle distinction exists in how these two groups are exploited. Widows are treated as passive spoils of war, simply claimed after the fall of their husbands. In contrast, orphans are actively taken as slaves, much like a looter who purposefully sifts through plunder to select what is most useful and profitable [מלבי״ם].
