A massive, powerful army faces a devastating defeat, reduced to a mere shadow of its former size. The prophecy captures the scale of this destruction through the vivid image of a thick forest that has been almost entirely chopped down. The sprawling military camp is compared to the dense woods, while the few surviving soldiers and officers are likened to the rare, lonely trees left standing among the wreckage [אברבנאל, רד״ק, מצודת דוד].

The remaining forces will be so small that they become incredibly easy to count [מלבי״ם, רד״ק, רש״י]. To emphasize just how few will survive, the prophecy notes that a young boy could easily tally and record their names one by one without growing tired [מצודת דוד, אברבנאל]. The group of survivors will be so remarkably tiny that even a child with no formal understanding of numbers and absolutely no experience in basic math would be able to count and document them with complete ease [אבן עזרא, ביאור שטיינזלץ].
