ישעיהו, פרק ל״ח, פסוק ג׳

Isaiah 38:3Sefaria

וַיֹּאמַ֗ר אָנָּ֤ה יְהֹוָה֙ זְכׇר־נָ֞א אֵ֣ת אֲשֶׁ֧ר הִתְהַלַּ֣כְתִּי לְפָנֶ֗יךָ בֶּֽאֱמֶת֙ וּבְלֵ֣ב שָׁלֵ֔ם וְהַטּ֥וֹב בְּעֵינֶ֖יךָ עָשִׂ֑יתִי וַיֵּ֥בְךְּ חִזְקִיָּ֖הוּ בְּכִ֥י גָדֽוֹל׃ {ס}

Facing the terrifying prospect of death, King Hezekiah confronts the reality that his life is about to end without any continuity or lasting legacy for his good deeds. In his darkest moment, he breaks down into a deeply emotional and pain-filled prayer [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

His plea to God begins with an expression of intense supplication [מצודת ציון, מנחת שי]. Yet, this opening cry is not merely a polite request; it is a piercing expression of a broken heart, almost asking God where His mercy has gone [רש״י]. As he prays, Hezekiah details his lifelong devotion. He compares his relationship with God to a child walking directly in front of a father, moving exactly in the direction the father guides him. This represents his precise and careful adherence to the path of the Commandments [שד״ל].

Hezekiah justifies his actions through three sequential levels of spiritual and practical completeness [מלבי״ם]. First, he speaks of his perfection in thought and intellect, rooted in pure faith and a complete rejection of false beliefs. Second, he highlights his pure intentions. His commitment to doing good was driven solely by a desire to fulfill God's will, completely free from any hope for physical or spiritual reward. His heart was never divided between his actions and a desire for personal gain; it was entirely dedicated to God [מלבי״ם, שד״ל]. Finally, he points to his perfection in action. He did not settle for pure thoughts and good intentions alone. Instead, he successfully overcame all obstacles to turn his inner devotion into actual, tangible deeds [מלבי״ם].

A massive gap exists between Hezekiah's absolute, three-tiered devotion to God and the bitter, impending reality of his death. This painful contrast is what leads to his heartbreaking collapse into intense, despairing tears [ביאור שטיינזלץ].
