In a powerful vision, Jeremiah stands before numerous nations and kingdoms, offering them a cup of poison. When the nations refuse to accept the drink, their reaction represents a desperate attempt to resist their destined fate. They try to save themselves from the impending disasters and actively fight against Nebuchadnezzar [מצודת דוד, מלבי״ם].

However, the prophet is commanded to deliver a firm message that they will inevitably consume the poison. The primary approach among commentators is that despite their greatest efforts to escape, the nations will be forced to suffer this outcome against their will. God will orchestrate world events to ensure the disaster takes place, leaving them with no possible way to avoid His judgment.
