When the enemy strikes and the time of slaughter arrives, the nation's leaders and greatest heroes will find themselves completely trapped. The primary approach among commentators is that these powerful figures, compared to the strongest members of a flock, will have nowhere to run. The destruction will be so absolute that not even a small remnant will be left behind.

There is a fine distinction between the types of salvation that will be denied to them [מלבי״ם]. One form of escape involves the calculated, intellectual decision of a human being choosing to run away to a safe haven. Another form is simple, instinctual physical survival, a basic trait shared even with animals. In this devastating moment, both avenues will vanish. The heroes will neither be able to outsmart the enemy through a planned retreat nor manage to survive purely by physical instinct. Every possibility of making it out alive will be completely lost.
