The sweeping changes brought by the Babylonian Empire deeply affect both the land of Israel and its neighbors, linking their fates together in an overarching historical process. However, the land of Israel is destined to experience a unique level of destruction and emptiness, standing in stark contrast to the rest of the region. This exceptionally harsh outcome is a direct result of the choice to actively rebel against the Babylonian king, Nebuchadnezzar [מלבי״ם].

Alongside Israel, the neighboring nations, such as Ammon and Moab, are also drawn into this new reality [מצודת דוד], [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. They are subjected to serve the Babylonian king for a period of seventy years. There are differing perspectives on how these surrounding nations interact with the empire. One approach suggests that these neighboring countries also choose to rebel against Babylon, which brings about their seventy-year sentence of subjugation as a punishment [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Another perspective draws a sharp distinction between Israel and its neighbors. According to this view, the surrounding nations do not rebel. Because they do not resist Babylonian rule, their consequence is limited strictly to servitude and subjugation for seventy years, sparing them from the absolute devastation that falls upon Israel [מלבי״ם].
