ירמיהו, פרק ל״ג, פסוק ג׳

Jeremiah 33:3Sefaria

קְרָ֥א אֵלַ֖י וְאֶעֱנֶ֑ךָּ וְאַגִּ֧ידָה לְּךָ֛ גְּדֹל֥וֹת וּבְצֻר֖וֹת לֹ֥א יְדַעְתָּֽם׃ {פ}

God's invitation to the prophet to reach out to Him signals a dramatic shift in the nature of his prophecy. This call to communicate is meant to reveal the future [רש״י], specifically the promise of ultimate redemption [מצודת דוד]. This represents a complete reversal of earlier instructions, where God explicitly forbade the prophet from praying on behalf of the people [רד״ק]. Furthermore, because his previous messages were filled exclusively with disaster, the prophet was weighed down by sadness. This lack of joy prevented him from initiating prophecy on his own, meaning he could only receive visions when God chose to approach Him. Now, with positive news on the horizon, he is granted the ability to call out to God and receive an answer whenever he desires [מלבי״ם].

The upcoming revelations are described as massive, powerful comforts [רד״ק, מצודת דוד] that are entirely miraculous and beyond the normal bounds of nature [מלבי״ם]. Commentators offer two complementary ways to understand the specific character of these promises. One approach views them as strong, fortress-like guarantees [מצודת ציון]. They are completely stable assurances that will never change and will endure forever [מלבי״ם]. A second perspective understands them as hidden or guarded matters [רד״ק, מנחת שי]. These are closed secrets [ביאור שטיינזלץ] that God has kept safely in His heart, waiting for the exact right moment to bring them into reality [רש״י, מנחת שי].

Ultimately, these messages of hope are concepts the prophet had never known before. Because he had only been exposed to visions of anger and destruction up until this point, these comforting promises of redemption had remained completely hidden from him [מלבי״ם, מצודת דוד].
