To fully capture the scope of the tragedy, commentators draw a careful distinction between the different types of devastation experienced. When referring to the central city of Jerusalem, the concept of ruin is applied, which points specifically to the physical destruction of buildings.

The focus then broadens to the wider cities of Judah and the open streets of Jerusalem, encompassing the vast areas outside and between the homes [מצודת דוד, מלבי״ם].
