He promises never to abandon the descendants of Jacob and David, ensuring that leaders from David's royal line will always be raised to govern the descendants of the Patriarchs [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

The specific pairing of Jacob and David offers a deeper look into the nature of this leadership. One perspective suggests that the name Jacob actually serves as a reference to Aaron the Priest, highlighting the two specially chosen families that guide the nation: the royal line and the priestly line [רד״ק בשם רבי יונה]. Alternatively, Jacob is understood in its literal sense to emphasize two essential requirements for a king.
