Sounds of devastation and ruin echo across the landscape of Moab. The initial shouts of panic erupt directly from within the city of Horonaim [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The people cry out in distress over the rampant robbery, plunder, and massive destruction that are actively tearing through their home [מצודת דוד, מצודת ציון].

These cries trace a distinct geographical and military escape route. The most crushing defeat of the battle takes place on the downward slope of Horonaim. Because this slope is the site of the primary disaster, the initial screams of terror originate from there. The refugees who manage to survive the devastating blow at Horonaim flee toward a location known as the Ascent of Luhith, weeping as they run over the ruin they have just experienced. Their desperate escape eventually leads them to the city of Zoar. Upon arriving, the survivors raise their voices once more, publicly declaring to all that the nation of Moab has been completely shattered [מלבי״ם].
