Spiritual and leadership corruption infects every layer of society, stretching from the highest religious authorities down to the common citizens, pushing the entire nation toward an unavoidable disaster. The breakdown begins with the spiritual guides, who deliver false messages. These leaders either speak in the name of the idol Baal, which is inherently a lie [מצודת דוד], or they act as false prophets who guarantee empty promises of peace, thereby leading the public down a destructive path [רד״ק].

Following the prophets' lead, the established leadership takes advantage of the situation. The priests exercise harsh control and dominate the nation using their authority, fully backed by the false prophets. These prophets essentially serve as recruited intellectuals who defend and justify the corrupt system, granting the priests the freedom to twist justice however they please [רד״ק, מצודת דוד, שטיינזלץ]. Alternatively, the priests' actions can be understood not as ruling by force, but as eagerly accepting bribes. They take corrupt payments into their hands with the same joy as someone scooping sweet honey, all in order to pervert the law [רד״ק].

The most tragic aspect of this reality is that the masses are not victims forced into submission. Instead, the common people actually love this twisted alliance between the false prophets and the corrupt priests. They embrace this leadership because the leaders sugarcoat the people's bad deeds and soothe them with comfortable illusions [רד״ק, שטיינזלץ].

Faced with this bleak situation, a piercing question is presented to the nation. If they enjoy this corrupt reality right now, what will they do when its bitter end finally arrives and their illusions shatter? They are forced to consider whether the deceitful leaders they trusted so deeply will actually be able to save them from the punishment that is certain to come [מצודת דוד, רד״ק, שטיינזלץ].
