Jeremiah 5:17Sefaria

A nation often builds walls and gathers resources, believing these will provide immunity against famine and war. Yet, prophecy shatters this illusion of safety, detailing a systematic and gradual dismantling of every lifeline the people rely on. The approaching enemy will sweep through the land, consuming everything from basic sustenance to the very defenses meant to protect it.

The destruction begins with the food supply. The enemy will loot the crops, plundering all types of available food The primary approach among commentators is that the invading forces will consume the harvest and provisions that were carefully stored and intended for the children to eat The act of consumption here goes beyond merely taking food; it represents violent looting and total destruction As the devastation deepens, it spreads to the livestock and eventually strikes the very sources of agricultural growth. The invaders will not be satisfied with taking the fruit; they will completely ruin the vines and fig trees, ensuring a future of absolute starvation [מלבי״ם].

Offering a much harsher perspective, [רד״ק] suggests that the children themselves are the victims who will be consumed and destroyed by the enemy. This specific focus on young children highlights the immense emotional agony of the parents, who are forced to watch their offspring slaughtered as a direct consequence of the parents' own sins.

Once the sources of life and food are entirely wiped out, the enemy will turn its attention to the fortified cities that the people trusted for protection. The destruction of these cities is described in terms of poverty and destitution [רד״ק, מצודת ציון], illustrating how they will be completely crushed, broken, and depleted [רש״י, רד״ק, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The ultimate tool of this ruin is the sword. [רש״י] explains that the enemy troops, symbolized by the sword, will be the exact force that crushes these fortified cities. Alternatively, the sword simply emphasizes that this entire wave of destruction will take place amidst the brutal reality of war and military invasion
