All of creation, even the most raging sea, recognizes its boundaries and humbles itself before the power of God. Yet human beings, despite witnessing His greatness and strength, frequently refuse to restrain themselves. Set against the backdrop of this disciplined natural world, the nation stands out for its choice to actively rebel [ביאור שטיינזלץ, אברבנאל].
The root of this corruption lies deep within the heart. Rather than serving merely as the center of emotion, the heart acts as the primary governing force of the human soul, directing all of a person's energies toward either good or evil [מלבי״ם]. For the nation, this internal control center has become entirely crooked and openly defiant, mirroring the well-known biblical concept of a rebellious child [מצודת ציון]. It is a state of deep inner distortion where the people firmly refuse to listen to the voice of God [אברבנאל, מצודת דוד].
This internal decay naturally leads to outward action. The primary approach among commentators is that the people completely abandoned the good and proper path established by God. Instead, they chose to wander arbitrarily in whatever direction they pleased, guided only by their own twisted desires. However, other commentators add a deeper layer of cause and effect to these actions. Because the people abandoned a life of spiritual service and Commandments, they brought upon themselves a direct, proportional punishment. Having walked away from the right path, the inevitable result is that they will be forced out of their homeland. They will march away into exile, powerless before their enemies, as a direct consequence of leaving the protection of God [רד״ק, אברבנאל].
