Jeremiah 5:24Sefaria

Humanity often suffers from a profound blindness, failing to recognize its complete dependence on God for basic survival and agricultural success. True reverence for God should grow from a simple understanding of this reality. Even if a person does not reach a state of deep intellectual awe, their heart—which naturally leans toward material desires—should at least grasp that sin ultimately destroys physical prosperity [מלבי״ם]. This realization serves as a call to awaken. Even if a sincere reverence for God was missing in the past, it is time to take this truth to heart moving forward [מצודת דוד]. Recognizing God in this personal way highlights His direct oversight of the world, as He carefully watches human actions and responds with appropriate reward or punishment [מלבי״ם].

God’s care within nature operates on two distinct levels, the first being active provision. He supplies general rainfall throughout the entire year to provide drinking water and to sustain gardens and livestock [רד״ק]. Alongside this steady supply, He sends highly specific agricultural rains at the exact moments they are needed. He provides the early rain to water newly planted seeds and saturate the earth, followed by the late rain to nourish crops that have already sprouted This precise delivery of water is not the result of a blind natural system, but rather a constant, direct expression of God’s involvement in the world [מלבי״ם].

The second level of God's care is found in His maintenance of the natural order, specifically during the seven fixed weeks of the harvest season between Passover and the festival of Weeks The primary approach among commentators is that divine protection during this period takes the form of deliberate restraint. God protects the harvest by preventing rain from falling, since unseasonable downpours would ruin the mature crops. Furthermore, He provides favorable winds to assist the workers in winnowing the grain A different perspective views these established weeks through a spiritual lens, suggesting that God set this specific agricultural schedule so the people could fulfill two related commandments: the Omer offering and the Two Loaves [רש״י].

Ultimately, human existence relies entirely on God's will. People depend on Him to actively step into nature to provide timely rain, just as much as they need Him to uphold the fixed laws of nature, keeping harmful weather at bay when the crops are ready to be gathered [מלבי״ם].
