Jeremiah 5:4Sefaria

Faced with a deeply frustrating reality, the prophet Jeremiah searches for a psychological and social explanation for why his warnings fall on deaf ears. Rather than viewing the people's stubbornness as conscious rebellion or intentional heresy, he assumes their refusal to accept moral correction stems from simple ignorance Reflecting on their lack of response to his rebukes [רד"ק, מצודת דוד], he tries to excuse their behavior by attributing it to a fundamental state of poverty.

Commentators offer different perspectives on the nature of this poverty. Some view it as a spiritual emptiness, describing a population completely lacking in wisdom and understanding Others suggest a practical, socioeconomic reality. In this view, the prophet is observing the commoners, farmers, and laborers who are entirely consumed by the daily struggle for survival. Burdened by their physical work, they have neither the free time nor the education to pursue Torah, wisdom, or moral instruction [רד"ק, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

As a result of this impoverished state, the people act foolishly and lose their sense of reason. Trapped in their ignorance, they completely fail to realize that the disasters befalling them are actually meant to wake them up and open their ears to correction [מצודת דוד]. Their profound lack of awareness blinds them to God's relationship with the world. They fail to grasp both the universal way God guides the entire world, as well as the specific, private providence He exercises over the nation of Israel, a unique relationship that demands greater responsibility and a stricter standard of justice [מלבי"ם].

Believing that the common people are sinning merely by mistake and out of a lack of knowledge, the prophet decides to shift his focus. He concludes that he must turn to the leaders and the elite, fully expecting to find true understanding among them. Tragically, he will soon discover that these prominent figures have also completely cast off the authority of God's kingdom [חומת אנך].
