Nehemiah 10:34Sefaria

לְלֶ֣חֶם הַֽמַּעֲרֶ֡כֶת וּמִנְחַ֣ת הַתָּמִ֣יד וּלְעוֹלַ֣ת הַ֠תָּמִ֠יד הַשַּׁבָּת֨וֹת הֶחֳדָשִׁ֜ים לַמּוֹעֲדִ֗ים וְלַקֳּדָשִׁים֙ וְלַ֣חַטָּא֔וֹת לְכַפֵּ֖ר עַל־יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וְכֹ֖ל מְלֶ֥אכֶת בֵּית־אֱלֹהֵֽינוּ׃ {ס}

Public funds played a crucial role in sustaining the daily life and spiritual rhythm of the Temple. These gathered resources were carefully allocated for both specific sacrifices and the sanctuary's ongoing needs. Among the primary requirements was the showbread, a special offering involving complex preparation and precise arrangement. The daily routine also depended on these funds for regular grain offerings. While the primary approach among commentators views this as the grain and wine that accompanied the daily animal sacrifices [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ], another perspective suggests it refers to the fragrant incense burned each day on the golden altar [רלב״ג]. Additionally, the funds supported the daily burnt offerings, which were sacrificed consistently every morning and evening.

Beyond the daily routine, the money financed the special public sacrifices required throughout the year. This included the additional offerings brought on Sabbaths, New Moons, and festivals. It also covered holy offerings, which served as public peace offerings. Examples of these included the Omer grain offering, the two loaves of bread, and the special lambs brought during the holiday of Shavuot. To provide spiritual cleansing for the Israelites, the funds also supplied public sin offerings, specifically the goats sacrificed on New Moons and holidays to atone for the nation.

Finally, the collected resources ensured that all the general work of the house of God could continue uninterrupted. Commentators differ on the exact scope of this work. Some explain that it refers strictly to the physical upkeep and structural repairs of the Temple building [מצודת דוד]. Others take a broader view, suggesting it includes all the ongoing operational supplies needed for the Temple service, such as oil for the lamps, fine flour, wine, and even the resources required to prepare the Red Heifer [רלב״ג]. Ultimately, every one of these sacred tasks and physical necessities was supported entirely by the money gathered from the public [רש״י].
