Nehemiah 6:13Sefaria

לְמַ֤עַן שָׂכוּר֙ ה֔וּא לְמַֽעַן־אִירָ֥א וְאֶֽעֱשֶׂה־כֵּ֖ן וְחָטָ֑אתִי וְהָיָ֤ה לָהֶם֙ לְשֵׁ֣ם רָ֔ע לְמַ֖עַן יְחָֽרְפֽוּנִי׃ {פ}

A calculated trap set for a leader often targets their reputation rather than their physical safety. The false prophet who laid a snare for Nehemiah did not intend to harm him directly. Instead, he wove a psychological plot designed to destroy Nehemiah's moral standing and provide an excuse for public slander [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The primary approach among commentators is that this false prophet delivered his deceptive message simply because Nehemiah’s opponents paid him to do so. However, another perspective suggests a deeper conspiracy. The enemies hired the prophet specifically so they could later frame Nehemiah, falsely claiming that Nehemiah had hired the prophet himself in an effort to make himself king over Israel [מלבי״ם].

The core objective of this false prophecy was to strike terror into Nehemiah. His enemies, led by Sanballat, hoped to frighten him enough that he would follow the deceitful advice, flee, and hide inside the Temple sanctuary [רש״י, אבן עזרא, מצודת דוד]. Doing so would cause Nehemiah to commit a severe sin against God, because as a non-priest, he was strictly forbidden from entering the sanctuary [אבן עזרא, מצודת דוד, מלבי״ם].

Had Nehemiah fallen into this trap, Sanballat and his men would have seized the opportunity to ruin his reputation, publicize his failure, and publicly shame and curse him [רש״י, מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The disgrace they planned to bring upon him was twofold. First, they would expose him for desecrating God's Temple through an unauthorized entry [מצודת דוד, מלבי״ם]. Second, they would highlight his cowardice, pointing out that he had hidden and locked the Temple doors behind him out of sheer terror of his enemies [אבן עזרא].
