פרשת במדבר

Numbers 1:21Sefaria

פְּקֻדֵיהֶ֖ם לְמַטֵּ֣ה רְאוּבֵ֑ן שִׁשָּׁ֧ה וְאַרְבָּעִ֛ים אֶ֖לֶף וַחֲמֵ֥שׁ מֵאֽוֹת׃ {פ}

Counting a massive population for military service yields fascinating details about how the Israelites were organized. When the men of the tribe of Reuben are tallied, the final count reaches exactly forty-six thousand five hundred. Such a perfectly round number naturally raises a question, as it is highly unlikely that a large population would land exactly on the hundred without a single person adding to or subtracting from that precise figure.

The Torah, however, does not always insist on absolute mathematical precision and frequently employs rounded numbers [פני דוד]. This method of rounding appears in other well-known commandments. For instance, the instruction to count fifty days of the Omer actually refers to a practical count of forty-nine days. Similarly, the legal penalty of forty lashes is carried out as thirty-nine. In the same way, the population count for Reuben is presented as a rounded total rather than an exact headcount [פני דוד].

Beyond the numbers, the way the count is recorded offers a subtle perspective on the tribe itself. When detailing Reuben's population, the description is phrased in the plural, emphasizing the many distinct individuals who make up the community. This contrasts with the later tally of the tribe of Simeon, which is phrased in the singular to view that tribe as one unified, collective body. Despite this shift in perspective, whether looking at the many individuals or the single group, the underlying meaning and purpose of the census remain exactly the same [ביאור יש״ר].
