פרשת במדבר

Numbers 1:48Sefaria

וַיְדַבֵּ֥ר יְהֹוָ֖ה אֶל־מֹשֶׁ֥ה לֵּאמֹֽר׃

The separation of the tribe of Levi from the rest of the nation carries deep meaning and establishes their unique status. God's specific instruction regarding their role actually took place earlier in time [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Moses had been unsure about how to handle this particular tribe, wondering whether he should count them as their own distinct group or simply leave them uncounted entirely. To resolve this doubt, God provided him with a direct and explicit command [מלבי״ם].

The instruction to set the Levites apart comes from the very nature of the Tabernacle, which rests at the center of the camp. While the Tabernacle and the Torah kept inside it serve as the great unifying force for the entire nation, they must still remain separate from the people. This physical boundary is meant to show that the Torah is not a human invention but originates entirely from God. It perfectly mirrors the strict boundaries and distancing imposed on the Israelites when they stood at Mount Sinai. During the sin of the Golden Calf, the tribe of Levi stayed completely loyal to God and His Torah, fiercely protecting its holiness. Because of this unwavering loyalty, they were chosen to be the official gatekeepers of this divine testimony. They belong entirely to the Tabernacle and the Torah itself, rather than to the general community, which is why they are excluded from the standard counting of the Israelites [רש ר הירש].
