Numbers 12:13Sefaria

וַיִּצְעַ֣ק מֹשֶׁ֔ה אֶל־יְהֹוָ֖ה לֵאמֹ֑ר אֵ֕ל נָ֛א רְפָ֥א נָ֖א לָֽהּ׃ {פ}

When Miriam is struck with leprosy, Moses's reaction reveals his deep humility and the complex nature of his leadership. Rather than holding a grudge against his sister for speaking against him, he immediately begs God for mercy. Because his prayer is incredibly brief, he cries out with a loud voice. This public display of deep sorrow proves to the people that he feels her pain and is not secretly rejoicing in her punishment or seeking revenge

Moses ensures his prayer is spoken clearly and aloud so the public hears his complete forgiveness. This deliberate, explicit speech serves as a lesson for future generations on how to pray for the sick, showing that clear verbal expression carries spiritual power Others view his direct speech as a demand for a response, with Moses asking God to answer whether He will heal her or not Additionally, his approach teaches basic manners, showing that a person should offer words of praise and appeasement before presenting a request

By addressing God with a specific divine title, Moses appeals to two distinct attributes. On one hand, he calls upon God's absolute power and ability to cure the affliction On the other hand, the name invokes God's boundless kindness and mercy Furthermore, because Aaron is a close relative and therefore disqualified from officially examining or purifying his sister, Moses asks God to step into the role of the priest. He pleads for God to heal her directly, without the use of an angel

The repeated pleading in Moses's prayer serves a dual purpose. One expression acts as a desperate request for mercy, while the second functions as a demand for immediate action. Moses begs for instant healing so his sister will be spared the deep humiliation of being cast out of the camp Ultimately, God answers that while she will be healed and saved from a prolonged isolation, the demands of strict justice require her to be quarantined for at least seven days [מלבי״ם].

The extreme brevity of the prayer, along with the omission of Miriam's name, is highly intentional. The primary approach among commentators is that Moses deliberately keeps his prayer short so the Israelites will not complain that he spends excessive time praying while his sister suffers, or accuse him of using his position to pray at length only for his own family members. Leaving out her name further condenses the prayer. This omission establishes a practical rule for prayer: when asking for mercy for someone who is physically present, there is no need to explicitly mention their name
