משלי, פרק ב׳, פסוק ד׳

Proverbs 2:4Sefaria

אִם־תְּבַקְשֶׁ֥נָּה כַכָּ֑סֶף וְֽכַמַּטְמוֹנִ֥ים תַּחְפְּשֶֽׂנָּה׃

Achieving spiritual wisdom demands a complete shift in priorities. It requires the exact same passion, persistence, and sacrifice that people naturally pour into the pursuit of material wealth. The pursuit of wisdom is compared to chasing after money [מצודת דוד] and hunting for hidden, buried treasures [מצודת ציון]. To succeed, a person cannot simply squeeze this pursuit into their spare time. They must dedicate their best hours and focus all their thoughts on this goal, just as someone would relentlessly hunt for treasure in the dark [עמנואל הרומי]. This quest must be fueled by energy and joy, pushing past difficulties and disappointments, mirroring the drive of those who love wealth and are never satisfied [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

There is a distinct difference between merely wanting something and actively hunting for it. While seeking often just reflects a desire of the heart, searching requires a deep, thorough penetration into hidden spaces [מלבי ם באור המילות]. These two actions represent different types of effort. The pursuit of silver, much like commerce, symbolizes a willingness to trade away worldly desires and physical pleasures in exchange for wisdom [מלבי״ם]. Just as mining for silver involves descending into the dangerous depths of the earth, acquiring wisdom demands turning away from luxuries and committing to a continuous, daily struggle, sometimes requiring complete self-sacrifice [אמרי דעת].

Searching for hidden treasures, which requires digging deep into the earth or the ocean floor, represents the massive intellectual effort needed to uncover the deep secrets of the Torah [מלבי״ם]. This search is a highly systematic process. Just as miners drill in multiple locations until they strike a vein of silver, the quest for understanding requires gathering basic facts, carefully separating truth from falsehood, and avoiding relying on initial guesses until the investigation is entirely complete [רלב״ג].

Ultimately, this comparison to the material world serves as a true test of a person's reverence for Heaven. If someone is willing to run, exhaust themselves, and lose sleep to gain physical wealth, yet fails to show that same dedication toward God's teachings, their spiritual commitment is fundamentally flawed. A person will only achieve true closeness to God when they value wisdom just as much as gold and silver, applying the exact same massive effort to attain it [אלשיך].
