Reaching spiritual heights is never a random occurrence; it is the direct result of sustained effort and a relentless search for wisdom. When a person dedicates themselves to learning and investigation, a profound internal change takes place, leading to the ultimate human purpose: an inner fear of God and a mental comprehension of the Creator. Understanding is a natural outcome of this active pursuit of wisdom [רש״י]. By investing deep energy into seeking wisdom, as though hunting for hidden treasure, a person awakens to the true essence of the fear of God and learns to value it properly [אלשיך].
A deeply connected, two-way relationship exists between wisdom and the fear of God. On one hand, the fear of God is necessary to firmly establish the rules of wisdom in the heart, as these rules often contradict human nature and cannot always be proven through simple logic. On the other hand, without wisdom, achieving true fear is impossible, because wisdom is what reveals God's greatness and inspires a person to stand in awe of Him [מלבי״ם]. Another path to this realization is through the study of the natural world and astronomy. By observing the vast distances of the universe, the planetary orbits, and the massive stars, a person recognizes God's majesty. This observation fills them with humility and deep awe when reflecting on their own smallness as a creation [עמנואל הרומי].
Beyond this awe lies a higher stage: acquiring the knowledge of God. This is not basic knowledge, but rather a grasp of the hidden secrets of the Torah [מצודת דוד] and the most elevated concepts regarding divinity, such as the mysteries of creation and the divine chariot. These matters are handed down only to people of true wisdom and understanding [מלבי״ם]. Attaining this knowledge is an act of discovery, as divine awareness is not a new fact learned from the outside. Instead, it is a spiritual truth that the soul already received at Mount Sinai. While the physical body and the material world cause a person to forget this knowledge, intense spiritual effort refines the material self. By gaining the fear of God, which purifies the soul, a person manages to rediscover the spiritual truth they had lost [אלשיך]. Ultimately, uniting the fear of God with an understanding of divine wisdom fulfills the very purpose of human existence, earning a person direct personal care and an outpouring of wisdom from God [אמרי דעת].
