Proverbs 24:10Sefaria

הִ֭תְרַפִּיתָ בְּי֥וֹם צָרָ֗ה צַ֣ר כֹּחֶֽכָה׃

Times of crisis serve as the ultimate test of human character, revealing a person's true strength in both personal struggles and obligations toward others. Giving in to weakness, apathy, or inaction during difficult moments is not merely a temporary failure; it directly shapes a person's future and their ability to survive hardship. When a person allows themselves to become slack and weak, their actual strength diminishes [מצודת ציון].

The primary approach among commentators connects this idea to social responsibility and standing by others, particularly in life-or-death situations. If a person displays apathy and chooses to stand idly by during a friend's time of distress without offering help, they will face a strict measure-for-measure consequence. When their own day of trouble arrives, their strength will be too restricted to save them. They will find no rescuer, and others will simply stand by and watch, just as they once did [רש"י, אבן עזרא, מלבי"ם, מצודת דוד, עמנואל הרומי].

Beyond the social duty, this principle serves as psychological and spiritual guidance for facing personal hardships. In the midst of a crisis, a person is required to stand firm rather than surrender to fear [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Someone who fails to cultivate a brave heart that trusts in God, and instead yields to weakness at the onset of a struggle, will discover that when the true test comes, their strength will shrink and they will be unable to withstand the trouble [עמנואל הרומי].

This weakness can also manifest as despairing from prayer. Even when a crisis has already struck or a harsh decree seems final, a person must never stop pleading for mercy. If they surrender to despair, the very inner strength that could have been used for prayer and salvation turns into an enemy, actively increasing the danger against them [אלשיך].

On a spiritual level, this concept applies to the pursuit of wisdom and the service of God. A person who neglects Torah study and fails to acquire wisdom during peaceful, routine days will find themselves powerless when a crisis eventually strikes [רלב"ג]. Neglecting spiritual growth carries profound consequences; those who are lazy in their spiritual duties will not have ministering angels to support and strengthen them [רש"י]. Ultimately, on the most severe day of trouble—the day of death, when a person leaves behind all worldly pleasures—someone who neglected their soul and failed to gather merit will not find a defending angel to speak on their behalf and save them from judgment [עמנואל הרומי].
