כִּ֤י שֶׁ֨בַע ׀ יִפּ֣וֹל צַדִּ֣יק וָקָ֑ם וּ֝רְשָׁעִ֗ים יִכָּשְׁל֥וּ בְרָעָֽה׃

Life naturally brings a series of hardships and crises for everyone. The defining difference between a righteous person and a wicked one does not lie in avoiding failure entirely, but rather in the ability to recover from it. While a righteous individual may face numerous setbacks, they continually regain their footing. The idea of falling many times does not represent a specific mathematical count, but rather the reality of repeated struggles throughout life. This resilience is fueled by God's direct care and protection, which rescues the righteous from harm [רלב״ג, אבן עזרא, מלבי״ם]. The certainty of this recovery is absolute. In a spiritual sense, the restoration of the righteous is secured even before the hardship begins, as God has their salvation prepared well in advance of any collapse [אלשיך].

Conversely, those who pursue evil face an entirely different fate. Though they may be vast in number, their sheer volume offers no protection or salvation [אלשיך, מלבי״ם]. When they encounter hardship, they stumble permanently and are unable to ever rise again [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Even a minor misstep or slight failure is enough to cause their complete collapse, a stark contrast to the righteous who can recover even from a severe and total drop [אלשיך]. Furthermore, the disaster that overtakes them is rarely accidental. The very harm they plot and scheme against the righteous ultimately circles back, leaving the righteous untouched while bringing about the destruction of the schemers themselves [אבן עזרא, מלבי״ם, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

Despite this ultimate justice, there is a strict warning against prematurely celebrating or eagerly anticipating the ruin of those who do wrong. Human beings cannot comprehend God's complex methods. Gloating over another person's downfall can actually backfire. God might choose to withhold the deserved punishment from the wrongdoer simply to demonstrate to the onlooker that human understanding of heavenly justice is fundamentally flawed [אמרי דעת].
