וְ֭יֵקַר פִּדְי֥וֹן נַפְשָׁ֗ם וְחָדַ֥ל לְעוֹלָֽם׃

The pursuit of eternal life and the desperate hope to buy a way out of mortality are universal human struggles. Yet, any attempt to save the soul or secure immortality through material wealth is destined to fail. The ultimate fate of a person is not purchased with money, and the window of opportunity to repair one's spiritual state is strictly limited to a specific time. This refers specifically to the spiritual, eternal soul, completely distinct from the temporary physical body [מלבי״ם].

The primary approach among commentators is that redeeming this soul is not merely expensive; it is an absolute impossibility. The ransom is so rare that it effectively does not exist. It is completely out of reach, as no human being can live forever and escape physical death [רד״ק, מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. This inability to buy redemption carries deep spiritual implications for the World to Come. If a person fails to invest in good deeds during their lifetime, they have no means to ransom themselves after death. This reflects the practical reality that one can only benefit in the future from the preparations made in the present [מאירי].

While this reality highlights human helplessness in the face of mortality, another perspective frames the situation as a sharp moral rebuke. Because saving the eternal soul is infinitely more valuable than preserving the temporary body, a profound question arises: why do people surrender so easily? Instead of making the necessary spiritual effort, they simply give up in advance. They abandon the attempt to offer a spiritual ransom to God and fail to take even small steps to improve their actions, effectively allowing themselves to face eternal spiritual death [אלשיך, מלבי״ם].
