Psalms 51:15Sefaria

אֲלַמְּדָ֣ה פֹשְׁעִ֣ים דְּרָכֶ֑יךָ וְ֝חַטָּאִ֗ים אֵלֶ֥יךָ יָשֽׁוּבוּ׃

The experience of personal repentance does not end with the individual; it carries a deep public and educational purpose. A person's spiritual recovery and the forgiveness they receive from God can serve as a beacon of hope and practical guidance for others who have lost their way. The primary approach among commentators is that David highlights the public benefit that will grow from God's forgiveness. When people witness that God accepts and forgives even someone who has failed so severely, no one will ever despair of seeking a path back to Him. David offers his own life as a personal example, testifying that the gates of forgiveness are never permanently closed [רש״י, רד״ק, מצודת דוד, המאירי, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

However, before a person can truly influence others, they must first achieve inner purity. Words of correction and guidance can only penetrate the hearts of listeners and inspire real change when they flow from a soul that has been cleansed and a heart that has been repaired. If the speaker's heart is not pure, their words remain superficial and fail to leave a lasting impact [אלשיך].

The process of guiding others addresses two distinct types of wrongdoing, directly mirroring the different types of failures David confessed to earlier [אבן עזרא]. The first group consists of those who rebel intentionally, driven by a mistaken ideology that God's ways are unjust. These individuals need to be taught and intellectually convinced that His ways are full of kindness and justice. The second group consists of people who fail simply out of human weakness and physical desire. Because they already know right from wrong, they do not need intellectual teaching; rather, they need inspiration. Watching someone else successfully overcome their desires gives them the courage to conquer their own temptations and return to God [מלבי״ם].

Taking a deeper approach, some suggest that the transformation of repentance goes beyond the people themselves and affects the actual wrongdoings. According to this view, when a person returns to God out of profound love, the impure forces created by their past actions undergo a complete reversal. The intentional sins are transformed into merits, becoming holy forces that return and attach themselves to God [אלשיך].
