The imagery of stray dogs roaming under the cover of darkness paints a vivid picture of pursuit and danger. Commentators offer two main ways to understand this behavior: either as a description of the enemies' malicious actions or as a prediction of their ultimate punishment. According to the first perspective, the focus is on an active, relentless hunt. After spending the day speaking evil, these enemies return in the evening to ambush their targets [רש״י]. This fits the historical backdrop where King Saul dispatched guards to assassinate David in his home. Although David managed to escape early on, he feared the guards would come back during the night. Upon discovering that their target had slipped away, these pursuers growl in deep frustration, much like dogs, and actively scour the city streets trying to uncover his hiding spot [אלשיך, רד״ק].

Conversely, the primary approach among commentators views this canine imagery not as an ongoing attack, but as a measure-for-measure punishment. While similar language appears earlier in the psalm to describe the physical ambush of the righteous, the focus here shifts to the enemies' future downfall. The very people who once confidently prowled the city to hunt an innocent man will face a bitter reversal. They will be reduced to extreme poverty, forced to return to the city each evening only to beg at the doors of others. Instead of growling in predatory frustration, they will howl from heartache and the gnawing hunger of stray dogs. Their empty stomachs will rob them of sleep, driving them to wander the dark streets in a desperate, unending search for a simple piece of bread.
