הִנֵּ֤ה ׀ יַבִּ֘יע֤וּן בְּפִיהֶ֗ם חֲ֭רָבוֹת בְּשִׂפְתֽוֹתֵיהֶ֑ם כִּי־מִ֥י שֹׁמֵֽעַ׃

Surrounded by hostile forces, David faces enemies who plot evil and issue threats with a false sense of absolute security. As they pour out their malicious words, their speech is likened to the aggressive barking of dogs [אבן עזרא]. Yet, the danger they pose is far more severe than any animal. While dogs are limited to barking and biting, human enemies are far worse, as they wield clear language and deadly weapons to execute their plans [מלבי״ם].

The threats they utter are compared to sharp swords resting on their lips. The primary approach among commentators is that this imagery represents harsh, threatening, and deeply hurtful speech. Taking a different angle, [מצודת דוד] explains that this refers to malicious gossip, noting that spreading such destructive rumors is just as lethal as physically handing actual swords to King Saul so he can murder David. Alternatively, [מלבי״ם] understands the imagery quite literally, suggesting that the enemies are quietly whispering their concrete plans to assassinate David with a sword when morning comes.

The sheer boldness of these enemies stems from their arrogant assumption that no one is listening to them. On a practical, human level, they stand outside whispering their secrets, confident that David, who is trapped inside the house, cannot hear them [רד״ק, מלבי״ם]. They also feel completely secure that there is no authority figure nearby to hold them accountable [מאירי]. Beyond the physical realm, many commentators [אבן עזרא, אלשיך, מצודת דוד, שטיינזלץ] view their attitude as a profound denial of Divine providence. These enemies act as though they can do whatever they please, convinced that there is no ultimate justice and no judge. By believing that God does not hear their secrets or pay attention to their actions, they operate entirely without the fear of Heaven and feel no remorse for their destructive behavior.
