Alternatively, some suggest a more direct confrontation, where the attackers hurl their harsh words right to his face [מלבי"ם].

The identity of those waiting for his downfall reveals several distinct layers of danger. It points to a deep, painful betrayal by people the psalmist previously trusted as friends and supporters, who have now joined forces with his enemies [רד"ק, אבן עזרא]. Others view these figures simply as ambushers, constantly watching and hoping for his destruction [ביאור שטיינזלץ, המאירי]. Another perspective frames this as a dual battle: physical enemies target his body, while spiritual enemies wait for his death to claim his soul, with both forces working together against him [אלשיך].

This collaboration takes the form of a highly organized threat. While the physical enemies speak out in the open, those hunting for his life plot secretly among themselves [מלבי"ם]. The core of their shared scheme is the belief that God has abandoned the psalmist due to his past sins.
