Psalms 71:10Sefaria

A profound sense of isolation sets in when open hostility and hidden schemes merge into a tight ring of danger. The psalmist finds himself trapped in exactly this kind of threat, a situation made even harder by the surprising identity of his attackers and their absolute confidence that they will face no consequences for their actions.

The primary approach among commentators is that these enemies speak about him behind his back, spreading their malicious plans Alternatively, some suggest a more direct confrontation, where the attackers hurl their harsh words right to his face [מלבי"ם].

The identity of those waiting for his downfall reveals several distinct layers of danger. It points to a deep, painful betrayal by people the psalmist previously trusted as friends and supporters, who have now joined forces with his enemies Others view these figures simply as ambushers, constantly watching and hoping for his destruction [ביאור שטיינזלץ, המאירי]. Another perspective frames this as a dual battle: physical enemies target his body, while spiritual enemies wait for his death to claim his soul, with both forces working together against him [אלשיך].

This collaboration takes the form of a highly organized threat. While the physical enemies speak out in the open, those hunting for his life plot secretly among themselves [מלבי"ם]. The core of their shared scheme is the belief that God has abandoned the psalmist due to his past sins. Because they think he has lost divine protection and has no one left to save him, they conclude that they can hunt him down freely, without any fear of facing punishment from God [רש"י, רד"ק, המאירי].
