Psalms 71:7Sefaria

The turbulent life of King David, marked by deep crises and soaring successes, transcended his personal experience to become a profound public lesson. He stood as a living example to those around him, viewed either as a guiding model [מאירי] or as a supernatural phenomenon [מלבי״ם].

Observers were divided on the exact nature of the message his life conveyed. One approach views his public image as a symbol of suffering and a stark warning. The severe hardships and punishments David endured turned him into a deterrent. People who witnessed his agony were terrified that a similar fate might befall them, prompting them to absorb a moral lesson and carefully avoid sin

In contrast, another perspective sees his life as a testament to miracles, bravery, and faith. His mere survival against constant threats of death was an unnatural wonder [אלשיך]. His overwhelming success and absolute reliance on God transformed him into living proof of Divine power, awakening and strengthening trust in God even among those who previously lacked faith Some even concluded that David was kept alive miraculously solely as a public display to illustrate Divine providence in the world, rather than through his own merit [אלשיך].

Facing these varied public perceptions, David affirms that God is his ultimate source of strength and shelter [מאירי]. To those who viewed him merely as a tragic symbol of suffering, David emphasizes that despite his relentless troubles and life on the run, God remains his impenetrable fortress, protecting him from destruction and ensuring his eventual return to the throne Conversely, to those who saw him as an icon of success and heroism, David makes it clear that he claims no personal glory, attributing every ounce of his strength directly to God [מלבי״ם]. He further stresses that God does not merely use him as a cold, public exhibit to show His power to the world. Instead, God grants him a deeply personal refuge, rooted in a close relationship and Divine favor [אלשיך].
