תהלים, פרק פ״ח, פסוק ה׳

Psalms 88:5Sefaria

נֶ֭חְשַׁבְתִּי עִם־י֣וֹרְדֵי ב֑וֹר הָ֝יִ֗יתִי כְּגֶ֣בֶר אֵֽין־אֱיָֽל׃

A profound sense of despair and total helplessness can overwhelm a person to the point where they feel entirely erased from the world of the living. The speaker is drowning in such deep nothingness that the people around him already view him as someone who has passed away and descended into the grave, mourning him while he is still breathing [מאירי, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

Commentators offer different reasons for this extreme situation. Some suggest it stems from severe poverty, a drastically deteriorated physical appearance, and immense bodily weakness [אבן עזרא, מצודת דוד]. Taking a more chilling approach, another perspective paints the picture of a severely ill person who has lost consciousness. The people around him mistakenly believe he has died and begin preparing for his burial. Inside, he is fully alive and aware of his surroundings, yet completely paralyzed, unable to move even a single muscle to signal that he is still alive [מלבי״ם].

On a broader, national level, this state mirrors the people of Israel suffering in exile. Overwhelmed by endless troubles and persecution, they are viewed by the surrounding nations as dead, seemingly powerless to escape those who harm them [רד״ק, מאירי]. Alternatively, this descent is compared to a total destruction with no hope of recovery, much like the biblical congregation of Korah [אלשיך].

In the midst of this living death, the speaker is left entirely devoid of strength. He has become completely powerless, lacking the energy to endure his suffering or to save himself [אבן עזרא]. This exhaustion is so absolute that it feels as though he never possessed any strength to begin with [מצודת דוד]. Ultimately, he is stripped of even the most minimal energy required to simply ask for a way out of his misery [אלשיך].
