Song of Songs 1:17Sefaria

קֹר֤וֹת בָּתֵּ֙ינוּ֙ אֲרָזִ֔ים (רחיטנו) [רַהִיטֵ֖נוּ] בְּרוֹתִֽים׃

After a passionate period of wandering through the open wilderness, love naturally seeks to institutionalize its bond by establishing a permanent home. The relationship transitions from the unpredictable outdoors into a stable, magnificent structure designed to provide shelter, calm, and continuity [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. This enduring sanctuary is constructed from thick, resilient cedar beams. The surrounding elements of this home are understood in various ways: they may be the wooden boards laid across the beams to form a protective ceiling [ראשון לציון], the upper chambers and corridors where inhabitants walk and run [מצודת דוד, מצודת ציון], the decorative furniture filling the rooms [רש״י, אבן עזרא], or even the wooden troughs and pipes designed to channel rainwater [מצודת ציון, מלבי״ם]. Together with the cypress wood, these materials form a complete and lasting shelter.

The primary approach among commentators is that this magnificent house is an allegory for the Tabernacle and the Temple, the physical structures God prepared in order to dwell among the Israelites [רש״י, מצודת דוד, אבן עזרא, צרור המור]. In this spiritual architecture, the cedar beams represent the grand roof of the sanctuary. The cypress elements symbolize either the Temple floor where the priests would actively carry out their sacred service [תורה תמימה], or the long crossbars that ran from one end of the Tabernacle to the other, representing unity and closeness [עזרא בן שלמה]. On a deeper philosophical level, the Temple serves as the ultimate meeting point between the infinite God and limited humanity. The towering cedar trees embody the earthly desire to elevate material existence upward toward the divine. Conversely, the cypress wood, functioning much like water pipes, represents the flow of divine abundance descending from above to nourish a thirsty world [מלבי״ם].

Beyond the physical Temple, the building materials serve as a metaphor for the Israelites themselves. The tall, unyielding cedars represent the righteous individuals, prophets, and sages of each generation, while the cypress trees symbolize their devoted students [תורה תמימה, ספורנו]. The interlocking of the beams and boards illustrates the vital connection between the nation's leaders and the general public. Together, they construct a robust, stable spiritual edifice of faith in God, completely free of weakness or decay [ראשון לציון]. On a more personal, internal level, this unshakeable structure mirrors human intellect and imagination. When a person's mental and creative faculties are properly built and protected from errors and negative character traits, they create a pure, protected space for the soul to connect perfectly with God [רלב״ג].

The origins of this sacred building are also steeped in miraculous traditions. The sages relate that the cedars used for the Temple actually sprouted from the very stones upon which the patriarch Jacob once slept. These stones miraculously softened, merged together, and grew into the living foundations of the future sanctuary [תורה תמימה]. Furthermore, the cypress wood carries a hidden reference to a divine pact known as the Covenant of the Sea. This recalls the dramatic story of Nicanor, who traveled to Alexandria to bring back magnificent doors for the Temple. On his return journey, a fierce storm threatened to sink his ship, forcing the crew to cast one of the heavy doors into the ocean. When they prepared to throw the second door overboard to save the vessel, Nicanor demanded to be thrown into the sea along with it, demonstrating ultimate self-sacrifice for the sacred object. The sea immediately calmed. Upon arriving at the shores of Acre, a sea creature miraculously spat the lost door onto the dry land, revealing the ancient covenant God made with the sea to always protect the sacred vessels of His Temple [תורה תמימה, צאינה וראינה].
