Ecclesiastes 3:22Sefaria

Human beings naturally want to control the future, yet the inability to know what happens after death often brings deep frustration. Recognizing this limit on human understanding leads to a profound realization: the greatest opportunity a person has is to appreciate the present moment. Instead of sinking into worry about unknown outcomes, a person can find meaning and joy in their current actions.

The primary approach among commentators focuses on daily, material life. This perspective encourages people to enjoy the results of their hard work, to eat, and to be happy with what they have, rather than constantly expanding their desires and wanting wealth that belongs to others. This present life is the specific portion assigned to a person by Heaven. Trying to gather endless wealth loses its meaning because, after death, no one can see what will happen next. A person cannot know which of their children will inherit their money, or whether those children will preserve it or lose it. This inability to see beyond the current generation is clear throughout history; David could not see the actions of Solomon, and Solomon could not see the choices of his son Rehoboam [תורה תמימה]. Therefore, finding joy in the present serves as a soothing remedy for the natural limits of human vision [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Taking a different angle, this focus on the present can also be understood as a sharp critique of highly materialistic individuals who live entirely physical lives, much like animals. For such people, there truly is nothing better than enjoying their current existence, because they have not earned any portion beyond this world [אבן עזרא].

A completely different approach shifts the focus from the material world to the spiritual one. In this view, a person's daily actions are understood as doing good deeds and fulfilling Commandments. While some might believe that pure intellectual study is the most important pursuit, this perspective highlights that physical, practical actions are what truly complete a person and purify them for the World to Come. Relying strictly on the intellect can actually be dangerous and lead a person off the right path. As a result, a person should find joy in performing the practical Commandments commanded by God [תעלומות חכמה]. Being happy with one's lot means finding joy in the portion guaranteed to them in the World to Come. Additionally, looking around and seeing injustice and wickedness in the world can easily cause sadness. The comfort offered here is to focus entirely on doing good deeds in the present. A person may not live long enough to see God bring justice to the wicked, so true peace of mind must come from their own positive actions today [אלשיך].
