At the forefront of this returning community were the family leaders, who guided their respective households. Documenting this group was not merely about counting people, but about preserving their historical roots. The records served as a memory of the returnees' lineage, clarifying the exact identities of their ancestors and detailing the specific individuals who belonged to each family house [אבן עזרא, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

To manage this effectively, an organized system of genealogical record books was maintained. This system operated on two levels. Every family leader possessed a document tracing his ancestry all the way back to the original tribes of Israel. At the same time, each individual within the community held a corresponding record confirming their direct connection to one of these specific family houses [מלבי״ם].

This gathering drew together Jews who were living throughout the kingdom of Artaxerxes at that time [מצודת דוד]. Regarding the historical identity of this ruler, some identify him as King Darius [רש״י].
