A vast collection of precious wealth was gathered to be brought to the Temple. This treasure consisted of dedicated gifts set aside by the king, his advisors, and the Israelites who were living in the Babylonian kingdom at that time [רש״י, מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

To ensure the safe transport of these donations, Ezra entrusts the valuable property to a specific group of men who are given the heavy responsibility of guarding it [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The transfer of the treasure is handled with strict precision. The silver and gold are not simply handed over, but are given by exact weight [מצודת דוד]. This careful process involves a system of double verification, where Ezra first weighs the property himself, and the appointed guards then weigh it a second time [מלבי״ם].

Alongside the practical need for tight security and administration, this formal transfer carries a deeper spiritual motive. Ezra wishes to bring pleasure to God while granting the receiving priests the spiritual merit of performing a Commandment. By officially accepting the responsibility to transport the Temple funds, these men are transformed into agents of a Commandment. Since those engaged in such holy missions are shielded from harm, this arrangement is specifically intended to draw divine protection and providence over them during their journey [חומת אנך].
